Update:

In 2020, the national retail chain, JCPenney’s, filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy after years of declining revenue as customers moved online and the brand struggled to compete. JCPenney is not the only department store to announce store closures, Macy’s and Kolhs have made similar moves as the brands have also struggled in the new consumption environemnt.

As a part of these filings, the company announced that more than 200 stores would be closed. According to USA TODAY, these eight locations will be closed in mid-2025:

  • San Bruno, California (The Shops at Tanforan)
  • Denver, Colorado (The Shops At Northfield)
  • Pocatello, Idaho (Pine Ridge Mall)
  • Topeka, Kansas (West Ridge Mall)
  • Annapolis, Maryland (Westfield Annapolis Mall)
  • Newington, New Hampshire (Fox Run Mall)
  • Asheville, North Carolina (Asheville Mall)
  • Charleston, West Virginia (Charleston Town Center)

JCPenney joins other retail giants such as Macy’s and Walgreens, Rite Aid, which have also closed stores in these locations by 2025.

JCPenney’s is heading in a new direction with other well-known clothing brands

In January, JCPenney announced that it would be joining forces with the SPARC Group, which owns brands including Aéropostale, Brooks Brothers, Eddie Bauer, Lucky Brand, and Nautica under the name Catalyst Brands.

Executives argued that together, the new project brings an "unmatched portfolio of six iconic retail banners that celebrate." Although some of these brands have faced financial troubles over the last few years, leaders are hopeful that each brings their own strengths to the table, providing “a robust distribution network of owned stores, e-commerce sites and wholesale partners.”
