Bad news for Social Security checks in March: These are the Americans who won’t collect their up to $1,450 SSI until April
There won’t be a Supplemental Security Income payment in March, but there is no need for recipients to worry. Here’s what’s behind the quirk in payments.
Every month the Social Security Administration sends out millions of payments to retired and disabled workers, their spouses and children. Additionally, the SSA sends over 7 million Americans, who have few resources or little or no income, monthly Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments.
Due the monumental task of disbursing so many payments the SSA staggers them throughout the month. Payments to most retired workers, disabled and their families are sent out on the second, third or fourth Wednesday of the month depending on the beneficiaries date of birth. Those Social Security recipients who began collecting benefits before May 1997, or also collect SSI, receive their Social Security payments on the third of the month. SSI payments for their part for all recipients are disbursed on the first of the month.

Every now and then there is a hiccup in the payment schedule due to the date of the payment falling on a holiday, and for the first or third of the month falling on a Saturday or Sunday. When this happens, the SSA moves the payment forward as is the case for SSI payments in March.
The first of March fell on a Saturday, so the SSA advanced the payments of up to $1,450 to Friday, 28 February. The next SSI payment won’t go out until Tuesday, 1 April. As a matter of fact, there are six of the monthly SSI payments in 2025 that are moved up. The following are the SSI payments that are moved up in 2025:
| January | 31 December, 2024 |
| February | 31 January, 2025 |
| March | 28 February, 2025 |
| June | 30 May, 2025 |
| September | 29 July, 2025 |
| November | 31 October, 2025 |
| January, 2026 | 31 December, 2025 |
Social security payments that are supposed to go out on the third of the month will also be moved forward for those corresponding to May and August as the regular payment date falls on a weekend day.
