The rise of online banking has been a key factor in the ongoing closure of physical bank branches across the U.S.Kseniya Ovchinnikova

Branch closures continue apace in the U.S.

As the rise in internet banking leads to dwindling foot traffic at physical banking locations - a trend accelerated by the covid-19 pandemic - financial institutions in the U.S. have begun closing branches at a steady pace in recent years.

Indeed, a 2024 study by the credit-building platform Self Financial found that physical bank branches in America have been closing at an average rate of around 1,650 a year since 2018.

If the current closure trend continues, Self Financial predicted, bank branches could become extinct in the U.S. by 2041.

Bank of America branches have been shutting at a rate of about 200 per year since 2022, according to this list of closures published by the institution.
