CDK Global has announced it has begun working on restoring systems used by 15,000 car dealerships across the country after they were forced to shut them down following two cyber attacks that took place over the past few days.

According to Reuters, the company issued an emailed statement on Sunday saying they expect the recovery operation to last “several days.”

“We are continuing to actively engage with our customers and provide them with alternate ways to conduct business,” the statement said, per Reuters.

Yesterday, automotive insider Car Dealership Guy posted on X that there is “no concrete timeframe for resolution of CDK cyber attack.”

CDK suffers two cyber attacks

A massive cyberattack on CDK Global on Wednesday led car dealerships across the United States to suspend their operations after they lost access to the system that facilitates vehicle sales.

The company’s website states that its software is being used by over 15,000 car dealerships across the country, highlighting the scale of the attack and how it has brought the sector to a halt in a matter of minutes.

Just one day after the initial attack, another one forced the company to shut down its systems once again. CDK Global, which sells various products to car dealerships to facilitate sales and manage clients, informed customers on Thursday morning of the second attack.

The situation has become critical for the company and the customers who use their products, and the second attack postponed any plans to bring the systems back online, limiting the operations of dealerships across the country.

CDK reportedly decides to pay off cyber attackers

A Fortune report said the group claiming to have attacked CDK Global has demanded tens of millions of dollars in ransom, according to their source, who asked not to be identified because the information is confidential.

The source said CDK is planning to make the payment to the cyber criminals believed to be based in eastern Europe.

CDK is warning its customers to beware of bad actors who are attempting to take advantage of the confusion by contacting them to get system access. They urge their clients to communicate only with known official CDK Global employees.
