Say goodbye to Labradors and French Bulldogs: The 10 dog breeds this vet says he’d never own
Dogs can be so cute and cuddly, but some breeds may not work with your lifestyle or be more expensive to maintain than your wallet can afford.

There’s nothing like having a dog, and when well-behaved they can even win over those that would rather not be around them. They can be so cute and cuddly as well as having a delightful personality.
However, before bringing one of these furry friends into your house you should keep in mind that certain breeds come with chronic ailments that require expensive treatments. Others have behavioral traits or needs that might not suit your lifestyle.

Veterinarian Amir Anwary shared on his TikTok account 10 dog breeds that he would never own from his personal experience on seeing them at his clinic.
Dachshund
The first breed Amir singled out as one that he wouldn’t own are dachshunds. Despite being a lovely breed he listed the following downsides to these hotdogs:
- Bark all night
- Separation anxiety
- Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD): back problems
- Become really obese (which makes any back problems even worse)
French bulldog
“This cute little abomination,” Amir starts off talking about French bulldogs before explaining the main, and frequent, problems they have which are also very costly to have taken care of.
- Breathing problems
- Skin issues
- Back problems
Belgian Malinois
“This is not a dog, this is a machine,” says Amir because Belgian Malinois require constant physical and mental stimulation. For those with a full-time job like Amir, there is no way you will have enough time to give it the attention it needs to thrive. And he warns that if a Belgian Malinois doesn’t get the activity it needs, it will become destructive.
Border collie
Border collies are “lovely, lovely” dogs in Amir’s opinion. However, they are working dogs and they all basically have ADHD in his opinion. They too need constant mental and physical stimulation, so if you don’t have free time to get them out for exercise to make them happy, again they will also be destructive.
Labrador
While just about everyone agrees that labradors are “amazing,” they have two compounding qualities that has made Amir decide that he would never own one as he’s a pushover when it comes to his pets. They are very food driven, so they love to eat absolutely everything, and they are prone to becoming overweight. Unless you have the necessary self-control to keep your labrador on a strict diet, you’ll be calling yours Mr. Creosote.
Sharpei
These cute dogs are recognizable by all the multiple folds of skin they have. However, that is the first chink in the armor as that makes them prone to skin infections due to all their skin folds. They are also prone to get allergies, which are very expensive to treat and a lifelong aliment. Some other issues with Sharpeis include:
- Stubborness: difficult to train
- They can become aggressive if they don’t socialize
- Hip dysplasia
- Elbow dysplasia
Siberian husky
“These dogs are so vocal, they never keep quiet,” says Amir. Additionally, they are extremely high energy and “Without proper exercise they will become naughty, they will become destructive.” As well, they are very stubborn making them difficult to train. To top off the downside of these majestic animals, Amis says that they are “escape artists.” They have the will, and will use it, to find the way to get out of the house.
Cocker spaniel
This breed is generally healthy with only limited ailments that may need treatment. And while there are many wonderful cocker spaniels, there are some that seem to have “a screw lose in their heads,” says Amir. For him this breed comes in three settings which include:
- Happy-go-lucky
- Anxious, aggressive
- Anxious, anxious
They can be very anxious, prone to separation anxiety and cocker spaniels can be quite aggressive Amir says, sharing that there is actually a condition called “cocker rage syndrome” during which some dogs of this breed will have sudden bouts of extreme aggression.
Golden doddle
These dogs look like a big teddy bear, so Amir understands the appeal they have for would-be owners. However, he warns that golden doodles are “on a fast-track to becoming one of the dog breeds that has the highest vet bills, and it’s not even a purebred dog.” Some of the ailments that they are prone to suffer include:
- Hip dysplasia
- Elbow dysplasia
- Allergies
These are all chronic diseases that may require very expensive treatments. Furthermore, they become very attached to their owners so they have strong separation anxiety.
Chihuahua
Except for a couple of ailments, chihuahuas are fairly healthy dogs in general. However, Amir’s unwillingness to own one of them is based on their behavioral issues. This small breed of dog has “fear-based aggression,” which means they get aggressive when scared. Given that they are so small, they are basically scared all the time which can make taking them out anywhere to socialize very difficult.
