January 2025 is almost at an end, but the Social Security Administration still has to make a final batch of payments.

The U.S.’s Social Security Administration (SSA) has not yet completed this month’s schedule of Social Security payments.

Which Social Security checks are still to go out in January 2025?

Like every month, January 2025 has seen the SSA send out benefits to retired workers, disabled workers, recipients of survivors’ payments, and Americans who benefit from the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) scheme.

While the SSA has now issued all of January’s benefits for these programs - the last batch of payments went out on Wednesday, January 22 - there is nonetheless one more round of checks to distribute this month.

That’s because the SSA is preparing to pay out February’s SSI checks early - on Friday, January 31.

Why are February’s SSI payments going out early?

SSI recipients are usually paid on the first of the month. However, that payment date comes forward if the month begins on a weekend day or a holiday.

As February 1 is a Saturday, the SSA will issue next month’s SSI money on the closest working day before the first of the month, which is January 31.

As New Year’s Day is a holiday, January’s SSI payment was also made early. What’s more, beneficiaries of the scheme are to get their March checks ahead of schedule as well, as that month also starts on a weekend day.

The SSA will return to its regular SSI payment schedule in April, which begins on a working day: Tuesday, April 1.

How much money do SSI beneficiaries receive in 2025?

This year, the maximum monthly payment for an individual SSI recipient has risen to $967, following the implementation of the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2025.

Eligible couples on SSI benefits now receive a joint payment of up to $1,450 per month, while checks for a maximum of $484 are available to an eligible essential person.

Who qualifies for SSI payments?

A scheme that is different from other Social Security programs as it is needs-based rather than contribution-based, SSI is aimed at Americans who have little or no income and are over 65 or have a disability.

As of December 2024, almost 7.5 million people in the US received SSI benefits.

When do other Social Security recipients get their February money?

Most beneficiaries outside of the SSI program are to receive their Social Security checks on one of three Wednesdays in February 2025.

This is as part of a staggered schedule in which a recipient’s payment date is decided by their birthday. The schedule for February is:

  • Weds, Feb. 12, 2025: Recipients born on 1st to 10th of month
  • Weds, Feb. 19, 2025: Recipients born on 11th to 20th of month
  • Weds, Feb. 26, 2025: Recipients born on 21st to 31st of month

Are there any exceptions to this Social Security schedule?

Yes: the above timeline does not apply to a specific group of long-term Social Security beneficiaries.

Retired workers, disabled workers and survivors' pay recipients who first got their benefits before May 1997 are always paid on the third day of the month, no matter what their birthday is.

In February 2025, these Social Security beneficiaries are to get their checks on Monday 3rd.
