The Coca-Cola Company has moved to recall nearly 2,000 cases of Diet Coke, Fanta Orange and Sprite that were distributed in three southern US states.

Why did Coca-Cola initiate the recall?

A filing by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has revealed that the soft-drink giant began recalling the cases on 6 November due to the potential existence of “foreign material” in the beverages.

The 1,988 cases affected, which are all 12 packs of 12 oz cans, were distributed in Alabama, Florida and Mississippi, the FDA says.

The recall breaks down as follows: 417 cases of Diet Coke, 14 cases of Fanta Orange, and 1,557 cases of Sprite.

What is the degree of danger to consumers?

According to NBC News, Coca-Cola says the recall is now complete and that no cans possibly containing foreign materials remain on the market.

The FDA’s filing says this is a Class II recall, which seeks to avoid potential risks that are unlikely to leave consumers with serious and/or lasting health issues.

Per the agency, such a recall represents “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
