A massive strike of unionized hotel workers that belong to Unite Here got underway on Sunday. There are now some 10,000 on the picket line from more than two dozen Hyatt, Hilton and Marriott hotels in nine cities according to the labor union.

The multi-day strike at major travel destinations began after months-long negotiations to increase wages and reverse pandemic-era job cuts stalled. Around 200 more hotel workers in Baltimore walked out on Monday and more have been authorized to join the strike, which is scheduled to run through Wednesday “at any time.”

Unite Here says that hotel workers at 25 hotels in Baltimore, Boston, Greenwich, Honolulu, Kauai, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, and Seattle are currently on strike. In the coming days around 5,000 more hotel workers in New Haven, Oakland, and Providence could begin walking out at any time. “Each city’s strike will last one to three days,” informed the union which represents workers in hotels, casinos, and airports across the United States and Canada.

The union is urging people “not to eat, sleep, or meet at any hotel that is on strike or where workers have been on strike until they secure a new contract.” Picket lines could run “for up to 24 hours per day” outside struck hotels.

“Guests are encouraged to consult the union’s travel guide and use its Labor Dispute Map, where they can search hotels by name or city to learn whether a hotel is on strike and find alternatives,” advised Unite Here in a press release.
