Update:

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker has broken the record for the longest speech delivered on the Senate floor, which had not been surpassed since 1957.

Senator Booker took to the Senate floor and promised to speak about the damage being done by the Trump administration’s agenda until he couldn’t physically talk any longer. The New Jersey leader’s Democratic colleagues have supported his endeavor by asking him questions, which allows him to yield and take a momentary break. Those who have posed a question to provide the New Jersey senator with relief include New York Senator and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, and New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan.

Who holds the record for the longest speech on the Senate floor?

Senator Booker is inching closer to the record of 24 hours and 18 minutes, held by Democratic Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, a Southern lawmaker and segregationist who took to the Senate floor to raise awareness of his opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Senator Thurmond’s day log intervention was made to delay the vote, which would lead to the eventual passage of the historic legislation.

More than half a century later, Senator Book is getting closer to achieving this record, and his speech would already place him among the five longest interventions delivered on the floor of the chamber. Although this practice is uncommon, in 2013, Texas Senator Ted Cruz spoke for over 21 hours to criticize the Affordable Care Act, which had been passed a few years earlier.
