Update:

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has warned that artificial intelligence could have a major impact on white-collar employment within the next few years, saying society may not be prepared for the speed of the change. Speaking to Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes, Amodei argued that AI is already becoming capable of performing many tasks traditionally handled by entry-level professionals.

Cooper referenced Amodei’s previous prediction that AI could eliminate half of entry-level white-collar jobs and push unemployment to between 10% and 20% over the next one to five years.

“Yes, that is the future we could see if we don’t become aware of this problem,” Amodei said.

AI’s impact on white-collar jobs

Amodei pointed to specific professions as examples of sectors where AI is already proving highly capable.

“If we look at entry-level consultants, lawyers, financial professionals, many of the white-collar service industries, a lot of what they do, AI models are already quite good at,” he said. “Without intervention, it’s hard to imagine that there won’t be some significant job impact there.”

His concern is not simply that jobs will change, but that the transition could happen much faster than previous technological revolutions.

The warning, as you may have already pieced together for yourself, carries extra weight because Anthropic is one of the companies helping drive the AI boom. According to the report, more than 300,000 businesses use Anthropic’s Claude model, which is increasingly being used for customer service, medical research and software development. The company says AI now helps write around 90% of its own code.

Balancing innovation and risk

Despite building increasingly powerful AI systems, Amodei has repeatedly called for regulation and greater transparency around the technology.

“I worry a lot about the unknowns,” he said. “We’re thinking about the economic impacts of AI. We’re thinking about the misuse. We’re thinking about losing control of the model.”

The interview also highlighted Anthropic’s safety testing, including experiments in which AI models displayed troubling behavior when placed in simulated scenarios. Amodei argued that openly discussing such risks is essential, comparing the alternative to industries that ignored dangers until it was too late.

Asked who had given a handful of technology executives the authority to shape such a transformative technology, Amodei offered a blunt response.

“No one. Honestly, no one,” he said, adding that this is why he continues to advocate for “responsible and thoughtful regulation” of AI.
