Update:

Following the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela, President Donald Trump announced that Washington would maintain “oversight” in the country for the coming years after the fall of Nicolás Maduro’s government.

The U.S. administration has formally recognized Delcy Rodríguez as Venezuela’s new interim president, despite the fact that the 2024 presidential election had declared Edmundo González the winner.

According to Trump’s statements, Rodríguez could remain in the position as long as she cooperates closely with the United States. And although she has expressed her willingness to work with the Trump administration — even granting U.S. access to Venezuela’s oil reserves — tensions have already begun to surface less than a month after Maduro’s departure.

National affairs such be dealt with internally

In recent hours, Rodríguez addressed the Venezuelan public and the international community, stressing that political decisions in the country must be made directly by Venezuelan citizens through democratic institutions, not by orders from abroad.

“It’s important that we open space for democratic disagreement, but it must be politics with a capital P, and with a capital V for Venezuela. Enough of Washington issuing orders about Venezuelan politics (…) Let Venezuelan politics resolve our disagreements and internal conflicts. Enough of foreign powers. This republic has paid a high price for confronting the consequences of fascism and extremism in our country.”

In a firm and defiant message toward U.S. policy and actions, Rodríguez told the Trump administration that despite their differences, both countries must establish agreements that allow dialogue to continue without undermining Venezuela’s autonomy and national sovereignty.

“Despite our differences, we must speak to each other with respect. Despite our differences, we must meet and reach agreements (…) Let it be a Venezuelan political dialogue, one where external orders are no longer imposed — not from Washington, not from Bogotá, not from Madrid. A nationalized political dialogue (…) one that serves the common good of Venezuela,” she said.

Amid this tense landscape, Rodríguez also emphasized the need to reach agreements with the opposition in order to restore peace in the country. She reiterated her commitment to releasing political prisoners who opposed the previous Chavista government and were unjustly detained.

These statements come at a moment when the United States has been pressuring Venezuela to restart oil production through the involvement of American companies. The demands placed on Rodríguez since taking office have drawn criticism from the Miraflores Palace, where the interim president has been attempting to unify the country following Maduro’s fall.
