Toronto Pearson Airport has stated “all passengers and crew are accounted for” after a Delta Airlines plane flipped upside down on arrival from Minneapolis on Monday afternoon.

Injuries after Toronto crash

All 80 people on board the plane were safely evacuated, the U.S.‘s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed. According to reports, 15 people were being seen by paramedics, with three people (a man in his 60s, a woman in her 40s and a child) being treated for critical injuries, which are not thought to be life-threatening.

What caused the Delta plane to crash at Toronto Pearson?

The cause of the crash, which occurred after the plane in the tarmac, has yet to be established. However, Toronto has been hit by very heavy snow in recent days, with the City of Toronto reporting up to 23 centimeters of snow fell in the city over the weekend. Additionally, temperatures on Monday were expected to reach a maximum of only 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Delta Airlines Flight 4819 was operated by Endeavor Air, a Delta subsidiary which normally runs small planes on short routes.

Bombardier CRJ-900: everything you need to know

The aircraft involved in the crash was one of Endeavour’s 100 Bombardier CRJ-900s, which Delta uses two of: one with 70 seats and another with 76 seats (not including crew).

CRJ-900s have been in use for more than two decades, and have unremarkable safety records, with no major accidents. The stricken aircraft is approximately 16 years old, according to Federal Aviation Administration data. Individual planes usually operate for at least two to three decades, provided they receive regular maintenance.
