Dog owners beware: why shopping malls could be a hidden danger for your pet

Owners should take care to ensure that their pets do not become entangled when entering or exiting an escalator.

Dogs are among the most intelligent and capable animals, often overcoming any obstacles they encounter. However, it’s important not to assume that your pet understands all the mechanisms humans use to get around. A prime example is escalators, which, while simple for us to use, can be hazardous for dogs.

How escalator combs danger dogs

The comb of an escalator is the component that connects the moving walkway to the steps. Essentially, it’s that metal piece with tooth-like grooves located at the entrance and exit of an escalator.

Its purpose is to ease the transition from the stationary platform to the moving stairs. The issue arises because, while it’s easy for humans to step over the comb to enter and exit the escalator, dogs are prone to getting caught.

According to Srperro.com, since dogs don’t understand the escalator’s mechanism, they often get carried along, and their paws and fur can become entangled in the comb. Although many escalators are equipped with sensors that stop the machinery if the comb detects an object stuck within it, dogs can still get injured if we don’t help them avoid the comb.

How to prevent danger for your dog

There are several dogs that instinctively or out of fear refuse to go up or down escalator levels and instead ask their owners to carry them or take an alternative route. Holding your dog in your arms is one solution to prevent any potential danger, though the best option is always to use elevators or other transportation methods.
