On Monday, the over 90 million followers of Tesla CEO Elon Musk were hit with another strange message from the billionaire, one that suggested his life was under threat.

Was Elon Musk directly threatened by Russia?

‘If I die in mysterious circumstances, it’s been nice knowin ya,’ the post read on the social media platform Twitter, one that he recently purchased.

So what had provoked such a tweet? Was it related to that challenge he threw out to fight President Vladimir Putin following Russia’s unlawful and brutal invasion of neighbouring Ukraine? Well, it was certainly connected, if not directly.

Why was Musk threatened by Russia?

The clue lay in another message, one Musk had shared just moments before. The message, in Russian, was from Dmitry Rogozin, the head of the Russian space agency Roscosmos. In the translated version, which the entrepreneur included, there is a clear threat posed to him for his tech support to Ukraine.

‘Elon Musk, thus, is involved in supplying the fascist forces in Ukraine with military communication equipment. And for this, Elon, you will be held accountable like an adult - no matter how much you’ll play the fool.’

Musk, it should be remembered, was one of the first high-profile businessmen to get behind the Ukrainian cause, and as well as his public condemnations of what Putin was doing, he also sent them numerous Starlink terminals, the SpaceX satellite internet connection service. This allowed Ukrainians independent access to the internet aiding their communications as the aggressor bombed critical infrastructure.
