Explosion at Iranian oil port sparks panic and chaos in Bandar Abbas
An explosion at a port critical for the export of oil in Iran has left hundreds injured and killed five. What we know so far.

A major explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port in Bandar Abbas, Iran, killed five people and injured more than 700 on Saturday, April 26.
The explosion location was geolocated by CNN shortly after images from the incident began circulating on social media. Bander Abbas is located in the south of Iran, directly across the Strait of Hormuz from the United Arab Emirates on the Arabian Peninsula. CNN also reported on video images surfacing that show the explosion may have started in a warehouse located at the port. The subsequent explosion let out an enormous plume of dark smoke that covered the area.

Not the first major explosion at a port in the region in recent memory
Iranian government officials stated that the explosion was likely the result of a chemical mishandling. The accident’s disastrous effects are reminiscent of the August 2020 explosion at Beirut’s port, which left more than 218 dead and another 7,000 injured.
