Update:

After at least one pet got sick, tests were done which confirmed that the illness came from ingesting raw pet food that was contaminated with dangerous bacteria - salmonella and listeria. The FDA has pulled the food, made by Blue Ridge Beef, from the shelves after the food was found to be contaminated in at least two batches.

Recalled pet food: in which states was it sold?

The recalled items are “Puppy Mix” and “Kitten Mix” and were sold in two-pound packages from January 3-24 in the following states:

  • Virginia
  • Maryland
  • Pennsylvania
  • Connecticut
  • Massachusetts
  • New York
  • Tennessee
  • Rhode Island
  • Wisconsin

Numbers of the affected batches: N25 1230 (puppy food) and N26 0114 (kitten food)

Symptoms to look out for

Salmonella and listeria are dangerous for both animals and people. Symptoms to look out for in your pets include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and fatigue.

The symptoms are largely the same for humans, but more vulnerable groups of people - like the elderly or the young - can end up with serious health issues if exposed to salmonella and listeria. Listeria can cause infections like meningitis.

What to do if you bought a contaminated batch

Do not give the food to your pets. You should throw the food away safely and make sure no children, pets, or wild animals will be able to get into the food after you’ve thrown it out.

If you have been handling raw pet food, the FDA recommends washing your hands well and keeping anything that touches the raw pet food safely away from where you prepare your own food.

The FDA has recalled these batches of the food as a precaution to keep both pets and people healthy. If your pet shows any of these symptoms or you experience signs of illness after exposure to the food, call a vet or doctor. The FDA will update its website with any new information.
