Update:

A mysterious illness that first shocked the American Southwest in 1993 is once again drawing attention after recent international outbreaks put hantavirus back in the headlines. Let’s be clear that in the United States the disease remains extremely rare, but its fatality rate and sudden progression continue to be a cause of concern for health experts.

Here is the timeline behind hantavirus in the U.S. and the key numbers that explain why the virus still matters more than three decades later.

The 1993 Four Corners outbreak changed everything

The first recognized U.S. outbreak began in May 1993 in the Four Corners region, where Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah meet.

Doctors became alarmed after a healthy 19-year-old marathon runner in New Mexico died suddenly from severe respiratory failure just days after flu-like symptoms appeared. His fiancée had died from a similar unexplained illness only days earlier.

Investigators from the CDC and local health agencies eventually linked the illness to a previously unknown strain of hantavirus carried by deer mice. The virus was later named Sin Nombre virus, simply translated as ‘virus without a name’.

The numbers from the original outbreak

  • Around 30 cases were identified by August 1993
  • Roughly 20 people died
  • Early mortality rates exceeded 50%
  • Nearly 1,700 rodents were trapped during the investigation

Researchers later discovered that heavy rains and snowmelt had caused the deer mouse population to explode across the region.

Hantavirus spreads across more U.S. states

Although most American cases remain concentrated in western states, hantavirus has since appeared in at least 34 states.

Different rodent-linked strains were later identified, including:

  • Black Creek Canal virus in Florida
  • Bayou virus in Louisiana
  • New York-1 virus in New York

Health officials say almost all U.S. infections come from inhaling contaminated particles from rodent urine, droppings or saliva.

Importantly, no U.S. strain has ever been confirmed to spread person-to-person.

Yosemite became the largest modern U.S. outbreak

In 2012, hantavirus returned to national attention after an outbreak at California’s Yosemite National Park.

Yosemite outbreak numbers

  • 10 confirmed infections
  • Visitors ranged from 12 to 56 years old
  • 3 deaths were reported
  • Most infections were linked to rodent-infested cabin insulation

The outbreak forced closures inside Curry Village while rodent control measures were expanded.

The latest hantavirus numbers in the U.S.

According to CDC data cited by infectious disease researchers:

  • Fewer than 900 total U.S. cases were reported from 1993 through 2023
  • Current mortality rates remain close to 36% to 40%
  • Most cases still occur in western states including New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and California

Despite its rarity, doctors continue to warn that hantavirus can become deadly within days, especially when early symptoms resemble the flu.
