Thousands of California drivers have been ordered to repeat part of the licensing process after officials uncovered irregularities in previous tests.

California requires 11,000 drivers to retake driving test or lose their license
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has warned thousands of drivers that they could lose their driver’s licenses if they fail to retake their driving test.
According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, the DMV sent letters to around 11,000 drivers informing them that it had identified “anomalies” in their written knowledge tests and that they would be required to take the exam again within 30 days.
According to the reports, drivers who do not retake the test within 30 days of receiving the letter – or who fail the exam when they take it again – will have their driver’s licenses revoked.
DMV: “Ensuring the integrity of our testing process is essential”
A spokesperson for the California Department of Motor Vehicles told the newspaper by email that the agency had “identified anomalies in the results of certain knowledge tests.” The DMV added that the letters were issued as part of its routine internal quality control process.
“Ensuring the integrity of our testing process is essential. Knowledge tests play a critical role in confirming that drivers understand the rules of the road before obtaining a California driver’s license,” the DMV told the newspaper.
Thousands of California-licensed drivers who already passed their tests are receiving letters from the DMV stating their licenses are about to be cancelled.

What are California’s driver’s license restrictions
California’s Vehicle Code allows the DMV to investigate and reevaluate any driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle safely. The agency may also impose restrictions on a driver’s license to ensure the individual operates a vehicle within their capabilities.
These restrictions may be imposed by the DMV or required by law. They can include:
- Installing special mechanical equipment in the vehicle, such as hand controls.
- Limiting when or where a person may drive, such as prohibiting nighttime or freeway driving.
- Requiring the use of prescription glasses or contact lenses.
- Requiring additional equipment, such as outside rearview mirrors.
The DMV also specifies that there are no license restrictions based solely on age. Any restrictions are based on an individual’s specific circumstances or medical conditions, not how old they are.
