A few reflections on the 80th Golden Globes
What an interesting night. The Golden Globes are long. Having to get through awards for both TV and film is hard... doing so in an amount of time when celebrities are drinking and mingling makes that task even harder.
Chole Flowers, the world-renowned pianist, was given the difficult task of playing music to inform winners that their time for speaking was up. Many addressed her directly, telling her to stop, at times, she would move into a quieter melody.
As a viewer, the night felt weird. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association failed objectively as an organization when years of racist, or in the most charitable light negligent, leadership led to no Black representation within the membership. Artists from marginalized backgrounds have fought for every centimeter of space they have made for themselves within the industry; the reporting made clear that there were still spaces under lock and key for many Black journalists following Hollywood.
After one year of revamping its governance structure and policies, the Hollywood Foreign Press Associations' time out is over. Jerrod Carmichael spoke about a continued sense of discomfort surrounding the HFPA in opening his monologue, saying, "I am your host, Jerrod Carmichael, and I will tell you why I am here -- I am here because I am Black."
"I won't say they were a racist organization, but they didn't have a single Black member until George Floyd died," remarked the host a little further in the set.
Carmichael's words cut through the falseness brought on by the spectacle, while also speaking to the rich passion that could be felt between actors, and writers, directors, and all those that make these productions possible.
The HFPA has taken steps to improve the diversity of its membership. Various oddly worded statistics were mentioned. But its continued engagement and learning that will show whether or not the HFPA is changed. The number of countries represented, the number of gay members, Black members, women, non-binary, and transgender members matter but far less than one would think. If the organization only seeks to make quotes and not distribute power, these "efforts" will have been for not. Its too soon to see what the HFPA learned from the boycott, and really, only time will tell.
That's a wrap on the 80th Golden Globe Awards.

In late 2022, broadcasting from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California Mayan Lopez and Selenis Leyva of the new NBC comedy series ‘Lopez vs. Lopez’ joined HFPA president Helen Hoehne to announce the five nominees for each of the 27 award categories.
Voting for the nominees was given a makeover this year, with 103 international voters joining the 96 members for the first time to decide which actors, directors and works would be shortlisted for the Golden Globe Awards. The more diverse selection group was in response to criticism that the HFPA received last year that saw the awards ceremony boycotted even by its longtime broadcaster NBC.

The annual Golden Globes, established to honor the best in film and TV across the past year, are one of the world’s most well-known red-carpet event in the world. Founded in 1944, the awards ceremony run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has faced its fair share of controversy that boils down to one main issue: diversity.
For more on what led Hollywood icons to stage a historic boycott of the event last year, check out full coverage by Reem Abdalazem.
A new generation on new media hit the Golden Globes
Tik Tokers like Josh Richards have been spotted on the red carpet, representing a new generation that is only beginning to make its mark on the media industry.
Hollywood has struggled to adapt to the new media environment where apps like Tik Tok and YouTube are democratizing access to eyes. When money can be made with smaller budgets on a much shorter timeline, the film industry has had to make changes to stay profitable. Many actors have started to open up about how this has impacted their salaries, but also the types of projects they are being offered.
On a recent episode of Hot Ones, actor Matt Damon said that what makes money these days are remakes and sequels, which is where production companies are focusing their efforts. However, for viewers looking for the next best Hollywood classic, these types of movies often do not meet those expectations.
How exactly the industry will move forward remains to be seen... but Gen-Z is likely to take part in that transition.
Which film is likely to take home the award for Best Drama?
Typically there are differences between films selected by critics and industry insiders and favorites among the general public. This year, You Gov conducted a poll that found that in the Best Picture - Drama category, there are differences in opinion between fans of the Golden Globes and the general public.
Those who are likely to watch prefer "Avatar: Way of Water" over "Top Gun: Maverick," while the inverse is true when looking at the broader population. Whether either of the films will take home, the award is an open question considering that other films like Tar and The Fabelmans received more praise from critics.

Welcome to AS USA's live blog following the 80th Golden Globes
After a one-year hiatus, the Golden Globes, hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) are back in their traditional form.
Last year, investigative journalists from the Los Angeles Times uncovered corruption and discriminatory practices within the HFPA, in addition to the finding that the organization had no Black members. This reporting led to an industry-wide boycott of the ceremony, which led NBC to pull their live coverage of the event.
After a year of making changes to the governance structure of the HFPA, actors, directors, and other Hollywood big leagues have opted to return.
We will be bringing you the latest from the red carpet, and as the show really gets started, commentary on the winners, performances, and memorable moments.
