We have 90 more minutes from Toluca to decide who will be in the Concacaf Champions Cup final against Tigres UANL later this month. LAFC won the opening leg 2-1 over the Red Devils and now they head to Mexico hoping to defend their lead against one of the most potent attacking teams in the tournament.

LAFC recap

It was a stoppage time goal that made the difference in the first 90 minutes from BMO Stadium last week. The California side took a little while to find their feet in the match and and after a scare in the late stages of the first half in which Hugo Lloris had to bail out his side, LAFC woke up coming out of the halftime break. They looked like a different team in the first few minutes of the second 45 and it was Tim Tillman who put the MLS side up 1-0 in the 50th minute. Toluca equalized in the 73rd before Nkosi Tafari’s header in the 91st minute decided the first leg.

LAFC have only been in the CCC three times before and on two of those occasions they made it to the final. They are looking for another repeat trip to the final this year, but the only difference is they want to win it for the first time in club history. They beat Real Espana 7-1 on aggregate in the first round before needing a 92nd minute goal from David Martinez to get past Alajuelense in the round of 16. Then in the quarters they took on Cruz Azul and beat the seven time champions of the tournament with an aggregate of 4-1.

LAFC are currently third in the Western Conference of the MLS with 21 points and 6 wins 3 draws and 1 loss in league play. It’s a squad full of attacking potential and they showed that in the first game. Son Heung-Min is the leader of the attack with Denis Bouanga back from yellow card suspension. David Martinez, and his four CCC goals, will be looking to use his pace to keep the Toluca defense on it’s toes.

Toluca recap

The bad news for Toluca after the first leg was they lost. The good news was they got an away goal that could prove vital in this second leg from the Estadio Nemesio Diez. They have played two home matches in this tournament and have scored 4 goals in each of those outings in front of the Toluca faithful.

Toluca have won two Concacaf Champions Cup titles, but both of them were awfully spread out. They captured their first title in the fourth edition of the tournament back in 1968 and didn’t hoist the trophy against until 2003. They have been back to two finals since but fell just short. Toluca enjoyed a first round bye, but then needed a 4-0 win in the second leg of the round of 16 after a 3-2 loss against San Diego FC in the first leg to set up a date with the LA Galaxy. They would spank the Galaxy with a 7-2 aggregate to reach the semis.

The Liga MX Clausura is in the early stages of the playoffs and over the weekend Toluca lost to Pachuca at home by a scoreline of 1-0. They will try and turn that around in the second leg, but have to focus on this match tonight before turning their attention to Pachuca. Paulinho has been, and will always be the danger man for Toluca. He’s the competition’s leading score along with the Galaxy’s Gabriel Pec with six goals. He had a hat trick against the first leg against the Galaxy, and then a brace in the second leg. Helinho and Jesus Gallardo are a couple of other names to watch out for tonight if Toluca are going to advance to the final.

What’s at stake

The winner of this match will move on to the final on May 30th. Mexican side Tigres UANL already qualified for the final after their 1-0 win over Nashville SC from the Estadio Universitario on Tuesday night.
