Goodbye to the passport: Apple revolutionizes the way to pass border controls thanks to its new Digital ID
Apple takes another step toward full digitalization. With iOS 26, users will be able to use the new Digital ID feature to create a digital version of their passport.

Goodbye, physical passport? Apple is revolutionizing how travelers go through border control with its new feature: Digital ID. During its annual WWDC conference, the Cupertino, California–based company unveiled this new tool, which will be available with the upcoming iOS 26 operating system.
This is what Apple’s Digital ID will look like
With this feature, Apple users will be able to create and store a digital version of their passport or ID directly on their iPhones. The company’s main goal is to take another step toward digitalization, eventually allowing travelers to journey without carrying physical documentation.
As a result, border controls are expected to become faster and more secure, thanks to the use of technology. Soon, travelers will be able to show their identity directly from their iPhone, using methods like Face ID or Touch ID, which will help speed up the verification process and reduce long airport lines.
According to The Verge, the Digital ID is designed to work in cooperation with immigration authorities and airports. In recent months, Apple has worked directly with government agencies to ensure this new technology meets international security standards. The company has stated that all information will be encrypted and only shared with the user’s consent.

More than just for travel
The Digital ID won’t just be useful for travel. According to Apple, the technology can also be used in other scenarios, including car rentals, hotel check-ins, and age verification at retail stores. The overarching goal: replace physical documents in everyday situations.
While it may take time for Digital ID to be adopted worldwide, its implementation in the United States marks a major step forward in the move toward full digitalization.
