Update:

When it comes to seclusion, tranquility and being at one with nature, there are few places as serene as the islands off the west coast of Scotland.

Many of the islands that form part of the Inner and Outer Hebrides are uninhabited. The ones that are, are usually privately-owned - many of them have landed in the hands of the world’s richest and most powerful people. And occasionally, one will come up for sale...

Remote Scottish island placed on the market

Shuna is the latest Scottish island to have been put on the market. The stunning 1,110-acre island has been owned by the Gully family for 80 years. The island was inherited by the Viscountess Selby, a relative of Liberal politician Sir William Court Gully following the Second World War. Several generations of the Gully family were brought up on Shuna, as Jim Gully, Viscountess Selby‘s grandson told BBC Scotland News. “Everyone was so traumatized by what had gone on in the war that they were looking for a fresh start. Without ever having seen it she bought the island and moved her family up.”

Jim’s father Eddie looked after Shuna for the best part of eight decades - a role which was taken on more recently by Rob and Kathryn James but now it’s time for someone else to enjoy the island, as the family is selling up. The sale is being conducted by estate agents Knight Frank and Sotheby’s International Realty.

According to the marketing description, Shuna boasts a 20th-century castle, built by adventurer and Nimrod crew member George Alexander MacLean Buckley in 1911 which has potential for redevelopment, subject to planning, along with eight residential properties. In total, the accommodation on Shuna comfortably sleeps up to 52 guests. “Shuna Farmhouse, a comfortable and practical home, has historically been used as the island’s principal residence. At the northern end, the charming Boat House and neighboring Pier House enjoy calming views across Loch Shuna”.

How easy is it to access Shuna?

While Shuna is a secluded retreat, it is easily accessible as it has excellent transport links - with a private pier, slipways and helipad, plus easy boat access from Craobh Haven Marina and Arduaine Pier. Helicopter flights connect directly to Glasgow and Islay airports, both around 50 miles away.

This extraordinary Hebridean island offers an exceptional life lived off the beaten path and can be yours for the princely sum of £5.5 million (around $7.5 million). The island has already attracted interest from a number potential buyers, even though the asking price makes it one of the most expensive privately-owned property’s in the Hebrides.
