Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano is putting on a spectacular lava show: Here’s how to watch online or in person
Kilauea erupts again after brief calm, with lava fountains reaching 500 ft. Live feeds offer safe views as access is restricted for safety.
Kilauea is an active volcano located on the island of Hawaii, the island state’s largest island, from which it gets its name.
According to the US National Park Service (NPS), Kilauea is not only "the youngest and most active volcano on the island of Hawaiʻi," but “one of the busiest in the world."
The most recent eruption began on December 23, 2024, with the 30th episode of the event taking place on August 6, after which the volcano entered a period of repose. But, less than a month after those moments of calm, Kilauea is back in action, sending lava into the sky with many online looking to catch a glimpse of the action. "Lava fountains reached up to 500 ft (150 m) during this episode and averaged more than 250 cubic yards per sec (>200 cubic meters per sec) and produced over 12.5 million cubic yards (9.6 million cubic meters) of lava, the highest output for a short-lived fountain episode," reported the US Geological Survey (USGS) on September 2.
The USGS said that the north and south vents had stopped erupting, and they determined that the cessation in activity marked “the end of episode 32.”
How to watch Kilauea from the safety of your home
For those interested in seeing what remains of the volcanic activity, the USGS has published various live feeds covering the eruption from different angles.
This might be one of the best views many will ever experience, as the National Park Service restricts visitors from approaching the volcanoes during eruptions. This is because debris can be unexpectedly ejected at high speeds, and the fumes emitted can be toxic.
