He gives up a billion-dollar fortune to go live on a deserted island
A British man reclaimed an abandoned island in the Seychelles. He gave up a large fortune and invested in environmental conservation.

A British citizen spent decades transforming an abandoned island in the Seychelles into a thriving natural sanctuary where endangered species now roam freely. His name was Brendon Grimshaw, and in 1962 he purchased Moyenne Island — then a neglected patch of land — and later turned down lucrative offers to ensure its fragile ecosystem remained protected.
For nearly 40 years, Grimshaw led an ambitious ecological restoration effort focused on reforesting the island with native species, reviving local wildlife, and rejecting any form of intensive tourism development. He worked side‑by‑side with René Antoine Lafortune, and together they built a conservation model rooted in manual labor and patience.
When Grimshaw first arrived, the island was in rough shape: eroded soil, sparse vegetation, and a landscape stripped of life. But he saw potential. With Lafortune, he carved out walking paths and replanted thousands of native trees. More than 16,000 were eventually added, improving soil quality, boosting moisture levels, and creating the conditions needed for wildlife to slowly return.
From desolation to sanctuary
Animals were reintroduced without fences or enclosures. One of the project’s biggest milestones was the arrival of giant tortoises native to the Seychelles — a species on the brink of extinction. Other animals returned on their own, helping rebuild the island’s ecological chain naturally and without direct human intervention.
Today, Moyenne Island stands as an open, free sanctuary. Environmental conservation experts often cite it as a rare example of successful ecological restoration achieved without government funding or corporate sponsorship.
It’s also a powerful reminder that habitat recovery — paired with reduced human impact — can be a decisive factor in bringing damaged ecosystems back to life.
