Here is the list of Social Security offices that have closed after Elon Musk’s cuts at DOGE

Despite his promises that “Social Security will not be touched” Musk’s DOGE chainsaw is tearing into the agency firing staff and closing dozens of offices.

Update:

The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, has been going through a number of federal agencies and slashing the federal workforce. The newly formed agency to streamline government and cut costs is led by President Donald Trump’s number one campaign donor, tech billionaire Elon Musk.

His team has been on a slash-and-burn mission which appears to not be putting too much thought into where the cuts are made nor who they fire. This was evident when they fired the employees who work on the nation’s nuclear weapons or those working on bird flu, among others, that they then scrambled to try to hire back.

According to Trump, Social Security was supposed to be spared from the haphazard efficiency effort. He repeated a promise he’s made several times when asked about what was off-limits for DOGE saying, “Social Security will not be touched.”

That appears not to be the case though, as the SSA’s Office of Transformation and the Office of Civil Rights and Equal Opportunity were shuttered this week putting nearly 200 hundred employees on the street. Additionally, dozens of customer service offices across the country have been closed or are slated to be closed.

This will reduce the already overworked agency’s ability to help those who are some of the most vulnerable in United States. Social Security doesn’t just deal with retirement benefits but also serves those with severe physical and intellectual disabilities as well as orphans and the impoverished who desperately depend on the monthly payments they receive.

Many of these individuals have difficulty using online systems and assisting virtual hearings to resolve any issues with their case, thus necessitating somewhere to deal with a SSA customer representative in person.

The SSA currently has around 1,200 field offices and 10 regional offices. As of publishing, there were 44 offices on the DOGE ‘Wall of Receipts’ that were listed as having been terminated or were in the process. A handful of the sites that were eliminated are being consolidated or backfilled.

The office in Logan, West Virginia was also on the list but the post said that the “agency closing office temporarily.”

The closings have not gone unnoticed by law makers. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York wrote to the SSA to say that the closure of the White Plains office “will negatively impact thousands” of constituents in the surrounding area. She warned without an alternate site opening, they will be required to travel long distances. The nearest other Social Security office for them are between 24 and 135 miles away, which “would pose greater hardship” on them by “significantly increasing cost and time associated with travel.”
