Update:

March 26 is an important date for some of the more than 50 million retired workers who receive Social Security benefits in the United States. The same also goes for certain recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and survivors’ benefits.

That’s because the final Wednesday in March 2025 will see the Social Security Administration (SSA) send out the final round of benefits payments on this month’s schedule.

When are Social Security checks being sent in March 2025?

Each month, most of the U.S.’s 73 million recipients of Social Security benefits are issued their money on one of three Wednesdays, under a staggered system that decides a recipient’s payment day by their date of birth.

This month, the three-Wednesdays schedule began on March 12, when Social Security checks were distributed to beneficiaries born between the first and the 10th of each month. On March 19, payments were then made to recipients born on the 11th to the 20th.

And on March 26, it will be the turn of Social Security beneficiaries born between the 21st and the 31st.

Who gets their Social Security money outside the above schedule?

Social Security recipients who began claiming their benefits before May 1997 are not included in any of the above Wednesday payment runs. Instead, they normally receive their retirement, SSDI or survivors’ pay on the third of the month.

In March, therefore, these beneficiaries were scheduled to get their money on Monday 3rd.

Meanwhile, recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) - a separate benefits scheme that is paid for by general tax revenues, rather than Social Security taxes - usually receive their check on the first of the month.

There is an exception to the two payment dates outlined above: if they fall on a weekend or a holiday, they are moved forward to the nearest working day. As March 1 was a Saturday, this month’s SSI checks went out on February 28.

It is possible to claim both SSI and regular Social Security pay; such beneficiaries are paid the former on the first and the latter on the third (unless they fall on a Saturday/Sunday/holiday).

How much do retired workers get in Social Security payments?

Retired workers receive around $2,000 a month on average. To be precise, the average monthly retirement payment in 2025 stands at $1,978, according to the SSA.

How much a retired worker gets mainly comes down to their earnings history during their working life, and the age at which they begin claiming their retirement benefits.

Currently, the highest Social Security amount available to retirees in America is $5,108 per month.

How much money do other Social Security recipients get?

According to figures shared by the SSA, disabled workers are paid a monthly SSDI check for $1,580 on average, while recipients of survivors’ pay get an average of $1,546 a month. The SSI scheme, meanwhile, features monthly payments that average $714.
