How federal government employees losing their jobs could benefit you: What we know about the “DOGE Dividend”
Trump is said to be keen on giving back some money from DOGE cuts to US citizens.
Donald Trump has said that he is keen on giving back money to US citizens saved via the new Department of Government Efficiency.
The President has outlined a potential plan that would see 20% of the savings produced by DOGE’s cost-cutting go to American citizens with another 20% going to paying the national debt.
“I love it. They’ll be reporting it themselves. They participate in the process of saving us money”, he responded aboard Air Force One, after being quizzed by a reporter about the plan which was first proposed by Musk.
The idea first came as a suggestion from a user on Twitter who floated that Trump and Musk should announce a ”DOGE Dividend”, a plan that would send a refund to taxpayers from part of the savings made by DOGE.
Later, at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Musk said that “I talked to the president and he is supportive of [the idea]... It sounds like that is something we are going to do.”
However, there has been some backlash, with one report saying the idea would be unworkable, as Trump does not have the power without congressional authorisation to move money from government programs to individuals.
