How much does it cost to renew your New York state driver’s license?
Check out this estimate of the fees you may anticipate paying at the DMV when you renew your license.
You’ll have to pay a few different fees when renewing your New York driver’s license. Let’s dissect some of those costs, so you know what to expect when renewing your license. To begin, you’ll need to check your eyes, which might cost extra if you go via a service other than the DMV (like Cleared to Drive).
The Cleared to Drive virtual eye exam is a $49 one-time fee. The costs charged by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles to renew your license are separate from this vision screening expense. You may finalize your renewal on the DMV’s website once you’ve passed your vision exam.

Depending on your location in New York, you may expect to pay between $64.50 and $80.50 for routine license renewal (Class D or DJ). This is because a Metropolitan Transportation Commuter District (MTCD) fee is added to certain counties’ bills. An MTCD charge of $16 for an 8-year license is included in the renewal of a driver’s license in the following New York counties: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester. This is why residents in these counties must pay $80.50 to renew a regular license, whereas residents of the rest of New York State may pay as little as $64.50.
License Renewal for Commercial Drivers
Costing $100 more than a basic license renewal, commercial driver’s licenses (Classes A, B, and C) are required for those who drive for a living. Commercial driver’s license renewal is $180.50 if you reside in a state that requires the MTCD charge. Your renewal fee will be $164.50 if you do not reside in one of the counties listed above. Fees for renewing your license may increase depending on the number of endorsements you already have. If you want to lessen the cost of your renewal by switching to a lower-cost class of driver’s license, you can do so.
