The heat is pressing. When summer arrives, it tends to do so all at once—like a single, scorching blow. Summer isn’t a traitor, but it certainly doesn’t give much warning. There are thousands of ways to try and cope with the rising temperatures: from adopting new habits of varying complexity to wearing breathable clothing that lets air circulate between fabric and skin. Still, no matter how trends shift or landscapes change, the most effective—and simplest—way to beat the heat remains the same year after year: drink water.

Sweating and exhaustion become even more unbearable when they disrupt sleep, making a cold bottle of water feel like a small miracle. But even if drinking water before bed seems like the right thing to do, it’s worth noting that it can come with some nearly inevitable consequences.

This is exactly what Dr. Julio Maset—a popular figure in a recent Cinfa Salud video—explains. With 245,000 followers on TikTok, Maset shares medical advice with his growing community. “Drinking water is essential for our health, but is it a good idea to do it right before bed? Let’s weigh the pros and cons,” begins the post.

On the hormone vasopressin and sleep disruption

Maset breaks it down clearly: “Staying hydrated is crucial for our body to function properly. Drinking water—even before bed—can help prevent issues like headaches or fatigue caused by dehydration,” he explains. He also notes that “the hormone vasopressin is regulated during the night, helping reduce urine production,” which in turn “allows our body to maintain a healthy water balance while we rest.”

But this delicate balance can be disrupted by reaching for that cold bottle right before lights out. “Drinking water just before bed could disturb our sleep,” Maset warns. “We might end up waking in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.”

So, what’s the best strategy for a restful night? “It’s important to stay well hydrated throughout the day,” he advises. “That way, your last drink of water won’t be excessive or too close to bedtime.”
