Millions of coins are exchanged every day for their face value. However, there are certain ones that can increase their value due to certain characteristics that make them unique. This is due to various factors, whether it be errors in the minting process or because they stopped being put into circulation years ago.

Such is the case for a particular 10-cent Mercury coin that sold for more than $150,000 in 2019 through Heritage Auctions. The high value of this coin is the result of an unusual detail on its reverse, and here’s how you can identify it.

The 10-cent coin that is worth up to $156,000

The coin in question is a mercury dime minted in Denver, Colorado in 1919. Its design features the winged head of Lady Liberty on the obverse, while the reverse features olive branches, representing peace, and a bundle of rods with a projecting axe blade, symbolizing unity and strength.

The reason behind its high price is due to the clarity of its fasces, that is, the set of rods accompanied by the axe blade; since the coin received the designation of “full bands”, which refers to the horizontal bands that can be seen on the fasces.

Since minting errors were quite common in 1919, collectors are looking for the ones that have a clear separation in the bands that bind the bundle, which are scarce. The clarity of detail on this coin makes it extremely valuable.
