The new shower format, which requires more space and financial investment, eliminates the drawbacks caused by the step and the shower screen.

Interior designers agree: this shower tray will stop being used in 2026 and the Italian model will start to be used

People often say a house has a life of its own. And it’s true. Every room evolves over time, shaped by changing styles, new technology and smarter design ideas. Sometimes those changes even push once-essential features toward extinction. According to many interior designers, that’s exactly what’s happening to the traditional shower tray.

For years, shower trays have been a popular choice because they take up little space and are practical for everyday use. But recent advances in bathroom design have helped popularize the Italian-style shower – better known in many countries as a walk-in shower. While it still serves the same purpose, its design offers several improvements over the conventional model.

Why are interior designers replacing traditional shower trays?

Traditional shower trays have two common drawbacks: the raised edge, which can become a tripping hazard, and the shower enclosure, where dirt and soap residue often build up over time.

A walk-in shower solves both issues. Instead of a separate enclosed space, it creates an open shower area that sits flush with the rest of the bathroom floor. There are no raised edges to step over and, in many designs, no shower enclosure at all. The floor has a subtle slope leading to a built-in drain, allowing water to flow away without flooding the rest of the bathroom.

Some homeowners choose different floor tiles to visually define the shower area, even though the floor remains level throughout. Others continue the same tile across the entire bathroom, creating a seamless look that makes the room feel larger and more open.

What are the downsides of a walk-in shower?

The design isn’t perfect for every home. The biggest drawbacks are cost and space. Walk-in showers are generally more expensive to install than a traditional shower tray, and they work best in larger bathrooms where there’s enough room to prevent water from splashing throughout the space.

Still, for homeowners with the necessary budget and layout, many interior designers believe the shift is already underway. With their minimalist appearance, improved accessibility and spacious feel, walk-in showers are becoming one of the defining features of modern bathroom design.
