Is McDonald’s bringing back the $5 value menu? What we know about the meal deal

McDonald’s is mulling creating a $5 value menu to draw back customers who’ve stopped visiting its restaurants due to reduced affordability.

Update:
McDonald’s proposes $5 value menu

McDonald’s saw over the past few years substantial growth in sales but earlier this year the fast food giant said that it expects sales to fall more in line with historical averages. The slowdown may have already begun, with low-income consumers making fewer visits to the burger joint, choosing instead to eat at home or visit other value-focused chains.

This can be blamed on the rising cost of eating out at McDonald’s which has seen the fastest rise in prices over the past decade of any other chain analyzed in a FinanceBuzz study. In order to lure those diners back the Golden Arches is considering rolling out a $5 value menu according to a report from Bloomberg.

The Chicago-based burger giant is currently consulting with franchise owners to see if they would be willing to offer the substantial value meal at their restaurants. The proposed $5 value menu, besides including a drink and fries would likely give customers the choice of three menu items; a McChicken sandwich, a McDouble hamburger, or four-piece chicken nuggets.

For context of how much prices have been rising at its restaurants, over the past ten years a four-piece McNugget Happy Meal has gone from $2.99 to $4.99, an increase of 67%, while the price of a McDouble sandwich has skyrocketed 168% going from $1.19 to $3.19. Over all, the average rise of the price of McDonald’s menu items has shot up 100%, more than three times the rate of actual inflation over the same period.

Along with offering more affordability, other initiatives that Mickey D’s is considering to draw in more customers include a “larger satiating burger.” As well, earlier this year the fast-food chain rolled out nationwide “small but tasty improvements” to make their core menu items better.
