For the second consecutive year the S&P 500, Dow Jones and Nasdaq all ended the calendar year with gains - the DJI with the biggest rise - 79.15 points (0.19%) to 42,652.88.
When do US stock markets close at New Year?
But even traders and investors need a day off and today’s trading session will be the final one of 2024. US stock markets are open for trading on New Year’s Eve (31 December) as usual. Markets open at 9:30 a.m. and will close at 2 p.m. ET - a couple of hours earlier than normal.
New Year’s Day is one of 10 days in the year when US stock markets are closed. There is no trading on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Good Friday and several other federal holidays but otherwise, business continues as normal on 355 days of the year.
The New York Stock Exchange, Dow Jones, Nasdaq and MIAX will all be closed on 1 January 2025 with the first trading session of the New Year slated for Thursday 2 January 2025, with the usual operating hours 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. ET.
The next market closure will be on Martin Luther King Jr. Day which has been a federal holiday since 1986. This year, it falls on Monday 20 January 2025. Markets will also pull the shutters up for George Washington’s Birthday on Wednesday 19 February.
