TAX SEASON 2024

Is the tax deadline day the same for all states?

Most states require filers to submit their tax returns very soon but a handful of states have different dates.

While 15 April is synonymous with “Tax Day,” not every state has the same deadline.

The federal deadline for filing your 2023 tax return falls on that date in 2024, but some states have different deadlines, and there are even situations where extensions can be granted. Here’s a breakdown of the states with different deadlines.

  • Massachusetts: April 17, 2024
  • Maine: April 17, 2024
  • Hawaii: April 22, 2024
  • New Mexico: April 30, 2024 (only for e-returns)
  • Oklahoma: April 20, 2024 (only for e-returns)
  • Delaware: April 30, 2024
  • Iowa: April 30, 2024
  • Virginia: May 1, 2024
  • Louisiana: May 15, 2024

Two states, Maine and Massachusetts, have their own deadlines due to holidays falling on or around 15 April. Residents of these states have an extra cushion and can file their federal returns by Wednesday, 17 April, 2024.

If you live in a federally declared disaster area, the IRS is likely extended your filing deadline. You can find a list of current disaster zones and their specific deadlines on the IRS website.

How to file an extension

Don’t fret if tomorrow finds you unprepared. Form 4868 allows you to request an automatic extension to file your federal return by 15 October, 2024. Remember, though, this extension applies only to filing, not paying. Any taxes owed are still due by the original April 15th deadline to avoid penalties and interest.
