Just 20 miles away from the shoreline, there’s a historic town in New Jersey that’s been identified as a top place to retire.


There is no shortage of retirement spots on the east coast of the United States. Around 20% of residents in Florida are over the age of 65, while up-state New York has plenty of options for those who want a more relaxing environment.
Atlantic City may not see like the best place for a slower pace of life but just 30 minutes away from the iconic boardwalk and busting beaches is a small town that has been named as the No. 1 retirement destination in New Jersey.
A report from GoBankingRate.com found that the historic town of Mays Landing, New Jersey is a great options to retire. The town has just 6,000 residents and sits beside the Great Egg Harbor River, an oasis of calm on the fringe of Lake Lenape Park.
Despite its small size, there’s no shortage of things to do in Mays Landing. There are family-owned shops, charming restaurants, indoor sports facilitates and three golf courses.
How much is a house in Mays Landing?
That’s the crucial question when planning for retirement, making sure that you can live comfortably in your chosen location. Despite the idyllic surroundings the price of property is exceptionally competitive, with mortgages actually below the national average.
Travel and Leisure found that the average single-family home in Mays Landing costs $332,000. The average monthly mortgage is $1,978, around $200 less than the national average.
In recent years it has become a popular spot for retirees and more than a fifth of the population is now aged 65 or older. The number of residents may be small but it’s grown substantially in the last few years. In 2010 a census found that there were just 2,135 residents. Now, it’s nearly tripled in size.
