It’s not kiwi or apples: This is the most cultivated fruit grown in New Zealand
Despite the kiwi fruit often being associated with the country, another fruit leads the way in terms of most cultivated.

By far the largest area planted in New Zealand is dedicated to wine grapes. As of June 2024, there were 37,600 hectares planted in wine grapes. However, these are primarily used for wine production, not typically consumed as fresh fruit.
While wine grapes occupy the largest land area, if we look at fruit grown primarily for consumption (fresh and processed) and its economic significance then both kiwifruit and apples could make an argument in being important as cultivated fruits in New Zealand.

The wines are well known for their purity, vibrancy, and intensity of flavor, largely due to the country’s cool maritime climate and long ripening seasons.

The Marlborough region of the country has become world-renowned for its distinctive style of Sauvignon Blanc. It’s often described as having pronounced herbaceous notes, alongside tropical fruit and high acidity, setting it apart from Sauvignon Blanc from other regions. Many consider it among the best in the world.
