Update:

By far the largest area planted in New Zealand is dedicated to wine grapes. As of June 2024, there were 37,600 hectares planted in wine grapes. However, these are primarily used for wine production, not typically consumed as fresh fruit.

While wine grapes occupy the largest land area, if we look at fruit grown primarily for consumption (fresh and processed) and its economic significance then both kiwifruit and apples could make an argument in being important as cultivated fruits in New Zealand.

Curiously, bananas are stated to be the most purchased fruit in New Zealand, although they are mostly imported with apples are also very popular for domestic consumption.

New Zealand wine

New Zealand wines are popular both domestically and on an international level.

The wines are well known for their purity, vibrancy, and intensity of flavor, largely due to the country’s cool maritime climate and long ripening seasons.

The Marlborough region of the country has become world-renowned for its distinctive style of Sauvignon Blanc. It’s often described as having pronounced herbaceous notes, alongside tropical fruit and high acidity, setting it apart from Sauvignon Blanc from other regions. Many consider it among the best in the world.

Despite its relatively small production volume compared to major wine-producing nations, New Zealand has built a reputation for consistently producing high-quality wines.
