José Oreiro, Human Resources expert: “Never tell your boss that a coworker earns more than you”
Never compare your paycheck to a colleague’s—here’s how to ask for a raise at the right time and in the right way, according to an expert.

In the workplace, negotiating a raise remains one of the most delicate moments for any professional. José Oreiro, general manager of Adecco in Galicia and a seasoned HR expert, has a clear warning: “Never tell your boss that another colleague makes more than you.”
In an interview with La Voz de Galicia, Oreiro explained that this is one of the most common—and counterproductive—mistakes employees make when asking for higher pay.
Focus on your own value
“Comparing yourself to other employees doesn’t add value to the conversation,” Oreiro said. “Each professional should defend their own performance and results, not rely on what the person next to them earns.”
Instead, he stresses the importance of objective arguments: achievements, responsibilities taken on, and contributions to the company’s success. “Your boss wants to hear reasons that justify investing in you, not internal conflicts,” he added.
Timing is everything
Oreiro recommends choosing the right moment: after a successful project, a positive performance review, or when the company is in a growth phase. “It’s not the same to ask during a crisis as it is after proving your value in a major challenge,” he noted.
Before sitting down to negotiate, he advises conducting an honest self-assessment:
- What do I bring to the company?
- How does my performance compare to the goals set?
- What unique value do I offer?
A strategic conversation, not a battle
“Salary negotiation isn’t a fight—it’s a strategic conversation,” Oreiro concluded. Employees should come prepared with solid arguments and a professional attitude. He also highlighted the importance of timing: December is one of the best months to ask for a raise, before budgets are finalized.
