Las Vegas is empty: The reasons why tourists aren’t flocking to Sin City anymore

With hotel occupancy only at 66.7 percent in early July, down nearly 17 percent from the same period last year, many are concerned for tourism in Vegas.

Update:

Las Vegas is currently experiencing a notable downturn in tourism, with this being particularly acute in 2025. Many factors have been cited as key in seeing only a 67% hotel occupancy in July 2025.

High costs for visitors are quoted as a key factor and although average daily room rates have fallen slightly in response, they remain high, especially with the addition of often-hidden and substantial resort fees.

Price again is another factor when it comes to good and entertainment with the cost of dining, shows, and other attractions has also risen considerably, deterring budget-conscious travelers. Some analysts have compared it to the “overpricing the market” situation seen in 2008-2009.

Slowdown in international tourism

Traditionally international visitors to Vegas typically stay longer and spend more but due to a series of U.S. government policies relating to tourism are harming the international market.

The likes of the new “visa integrity fees” (e.g., $250 in addition to existing visa costs) and aggressive immigration tactics have led to a decline of overseas visitors with Canadian visitors a notable source in the decline.

Historically, Canadian visitors have been the largest source of international visitors to Nevada with airlines like Flair Airlines reporting a 55% drop in passengers to Las Vegas compared to the previous year.

Mexico and Asian countries have also shown significant declines, partly due to travel advisories citing higher costs and difficulties in the U.S.
