When is Father's Day in the United States in 2026? date and meaning

Like many countries around the world, the United States dedicates a day to honoring fathers. Father’s Day is an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the important contributions fathers make to their families and society.

In the United States, the national observance of Father’s Day is largely credited to Sonora Smart Dodd, who sought to establish a holiday similar to Mother’s Day to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran.

When is Father’s Day in the United States in 2026?

In the United States, Father’s Day is celebrated each year on the third Sunday of June, so the date changes annually. In 2026, Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 21.

The history of Father’s Day in the United States

Although Sonora Smart Dodd is widely credited with establishing the national observance of Father’s Day, Grace Golden Clayton was the first person to propose honoring fathers. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, on July 5, 1908, a memorial service was organized at her request to honor the hundreds of men who lost their lives in a major mining disaster in December 1907.

Clayton proposed recognizing all fathers, especially those who had passed away. However, her idea did not gain widespread support and did not become an annual observance. That would not happen until 1910, thanks to Sonora Smart Dodd’s efforts.

Sonora Smart Dodd: Pioneer of the national Father’s Day celebration

A resident of Spokane, Washington, Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to create a holiday comparable to Mother’s Day, but one dedicated to honoring her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran.

Dodd originally proposed celebrating Father’s Day on June 5, her father’s birthday. Ultimately, however, organizers selected the third Sunday in June as the official date. As a result, the first “official” Father’s Day celebration took place on June 19, 1910.

How Father’s Day became a national holiday in the United States

Although Father’s Day did not gain popularity as quickly as Mother’s Day, it gradually spread across the country. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of establishing a national day to honor fathers, but the proposal was not formally adopted.

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson officially designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.

However, it was not until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed legislation recognizing Father’s Day as a permanent national holiday. His proclamation officially established the third Sunday of June as the day dedicated to honoring fathers throughout the United States.
