“Like gunshots in the sky”: Eyewitnesses describe shocking NYC helicopter crash
A helicopter carrying Spanish tourists fell from the sky and crashed into the Hudson River. Witnesses describe the horrifying details.
On Thursday afternoon, a helicopter giving a sightseeing tour in New York City crashed into the Hudson River, killing all six people on board. The helicopter was carrying a pilot, two adults, and three children. The family members were visiting from Spain.
The chopper was identified by the Federal Aviation Administration as a Bell 206 helicopter. By the time rescuers arrived on the scene, the helicopter was found upside down in the 50-degree water.

Eyewitnesses to the crash describe the event
The helicopter was conducting its sixth tour of the day. It had been in the air for about 12 minutes before the crash. Witnesses described the crash, with many pointing out the excruciatingly loud noises.
Witness Dani Horbiack told ABC News that she saw the helicopter “fall out of the sky” from her apartment window.
“I heard five or six loud noises that sounded almost like gunshots in the sky and saw pieces fall off, then watched it fall into the river,” Horbiack said.

“I was walking by and the helicopter went down at 45-degree angle,” Eric Campoverdesaid. “Big splash...it was very scary.”
“It sounded like a sonic boom,” another witness said. He described the “helicopter splitting in two with the rotor flying off” while another said they saw the propeller breaking into pieces.
