Update:

Walgreens are closing stores in the U.S. as part of a larger “turnaround plan” aimed at improving its financial performance and adapting to a changing retail and healthcare landscape.

A significant portion of Walgreens’ 8,500+ U.S. stores are considered unprofitable. The company announced plans to close approximately 1,200 stores over three years, with about 500 slated for 2025, to eliminate these underperforming locations and focus resources on profitable ones.

Walgreens has been facing ongoing financial challenges, including net losses (reporting a $3 billion loss in the final quarter of fiscal year 2024). These closures are a cost-cutting measure to improve cash flow and stabilize the business.

Pharmacy chains, including Walgreens, are experiencing pressure from declining prescription reimbursement rates from insurers and government programs like Medicare and Medicaid. This significantly impacts their ability to cover operating costs like rent, staffing, and supplies.
