There are several activities for Halloween throughout New York City that cater to whatever your way of celebrating the spookiest of holidays is. You can choose from events like this year’s ‘Pumpkin Nights’ at the Bronx Zoo or enjoy a costume parade like the legendary Village Halloween Parade which are fun for the whole family.

If you are looking to really get into the spirit of season when the boundaries between this world and the “other world” become permeable there are attractions in the Big Apple that will truly put a chill down your spine. Here’s a look at some of the scariest that will give you a fright.
Ridgewood Asylum Haunted House
“If you think there weren’t great quality, white-knuckle worthy haunted houses in Brooklyn-slash-Queens, you’re wrong,” says TimeOut. The Ridgewood Asylum and Haunted House is “part escape room and part haunted house.” The fifth year of this local crowd favorite is touted to be the biggest yet.

Blood Manor Haunted House
If you are looking to scream until your throat is soar, and perhaps wake up screaming again, then the Blood Manor Haunted House may be just what you are looking for. The TriBeCa attraction located at 359 Broadway is one of New York’s biggest that has been frightening guests for two decades.
The 20-minute show, revamped each year, has several professional actors and intricate sets that will make you feel that you are truly in a horror movie. The building, which dates back to around 1852, is also haunted by a 19th-century photographer says owner Jim Lorenzo.

Candlelight Ghost Tours of Manhattan’s Most Haunted House: Merchant’s House Museum
There is nothing like visiting a haunted house on Halloween and while there are those that do their very best to get a scream out of you, others are the real deal. That is the case with the Merchant’s House Museum in Noho which was once the residence of the Tredwell family, and some say it still is.
“Since the 1930s, when the house opened to the public as a museum, strange and inexplicable happenings have been reported – sounds, sightings, smells – by staff, volunteers, visitors, neighbors, even passersby,” states the website for the museum.
