Over the course of a lifetime, a mailman will travel to countless homes and may largely be forgotten. But one lucky postal worker was later reunited with a friend that he made on his route, and ended up taking him home with him.

Ian Burke was a mail carrier in Dustin, Texas on a route that included an elderly war veteran and his dog, Floyd. Burke visited Floyd’s house every week for around 18 months and developed a real bond with the dog, until he was eventually moved to a new route.

But after that move, Floyd’s owner sadly died and Burke was informed that the dog was in need of a new home. He tracked Floyd down to the City of Denton Animal Shelter and pulled out all the stops to ensure that he could take him home.

Speaking to ABC affiliate WFAA, Burke explained that he had arrived at the shelter before it opened to ensure that he would be “first in line” for the adoptees. He explained that Floyd’s late owner had “loved and cherished” the pet and he wanted to ensure that he would be well looked after.

“I’m taking this guy home with me,” Burke continued. “I don’t take it lightly, [this isn’t] some random dog I’m adopting.”

I kind of felt responsible to take care of him. I think he’d be pleased to know that his former mailman is taking good care of his dog,” he said.
