Update:

With the April 15 tax filing deadline approaching, some taxpayers may find their local IRS support office closed. Elon Musk’s ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ (DOGE) has announced plans to relinquish leases in more than fifty cities nationwide. However, DOGE officials, including Musk, have not clarified whether they will secure cheaper leases to ensure continued access to in-person taxpayer support. These offices assist not only individuals filing annual tax returns but also small businesses submitting quarterly filings.

How much does the federal government stand to save?

The leases that will be suspended across the IRS' national network are worth a total of $21.8 million. If the Trump administration opts to forgo opening up a new office with a cheaper lease, this figure is what the federal government would save annually. The amount spent on these leases represents less than one percent of the federal budget.

Based on Google’s reported operating status, seven IRS offices have already closed:

  1. Wailuku, HI
  2. Cedar Rapids, IA
  3. Champaign, IL
  4. Lowell, MA
  5. Southborough, MA
  6. Oxford, MS
  7. Mansfield, OH.

Additional closures may follow in the coming weeks and months.

More leases are listed for suspension, meaning more offices could close

With the April 15 tax filing deadline approaching, some taxpayers may find their taxpayer assistance center closed. However, the actual dates these field offices will shut their doors to the public have not been announced.

In addition to taxpayer support offices, IRS regional offices, have also appeared on DOGE’s closure list, raising concerns about whether these facilities will be permanently shut down without replacements. If these closures proceed, employees at these locations could face job losses. Additionally, Birmingham, Alabama will see two IRS offices closed, according to DOGE’s “Wall of Receipts" but it remains unclear what functions these offices carry out.
