What are the symptoms of monkeypox?
Monkeypox is a very contagious viral disease. The disease had some concerned that those with HIV would fare worse if infected. So far the evidence being reviewed by the agency has found that “there does not appear to be more severe monkeypox illness in people who have HIV and are virally suppressed (having less than 200 copies of HIV per milliliter of blood).” They made sure to add that at this point there is not a higher risk of severe illness or death.
Some of the most common symptoms, according to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), are fever, headache, muscle aches and backaches, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion, and “a rash that can look like pimples or blisters that appears on the face, inside the mouth, and on other parts of the body, like the hands, feet, chest, genitals, or anus.”
If you develop any of these symptoms, you should contact your primary healthcare provider.
It is critical that you avoid contact with animals and people until your test results are available. “Monkeypox is zoonotic, meaning it can spread between animals and people,” at this point, however, the “CDC does not currently believe that “monkeypox poses a high risk to pets.”
In the case that your case is confirmed, the CDC recommends that patients “stay isolated until your rash has healed, all scabs have fallen off, and a fresh layer of intact skin has formed.”
Who can receive a vaccine for monkeypox?
There is a vaccine available for monkeypox that is very similiar to that which is adminstered to prevent smallpox.
“Vaccines may be recommended for people who have had or may have contact with someone who has monkeypox, or for healthcare and public health workers who may be exposed to the virus,” recommends the CDC.
