More bad news for Tesla: Check out the Chinese EV that can go 250 miles with just a 5 minute charge

On Monday, Chinese EV giant BYD Auto unveiled a new ultra-fast charging unit for its latest range of electric cars which significantly speeds up the charging process.

The Shenzhen-based group’s billionaire founder, Wang Chuanfu, said the company’s new Super e-Platform battery and charging system will allow the latest EVs fitted with BYD’s Flash Charging Battery to be fully charged in five minutes, enabling the cars to travel up to the battery’s range capacity - 470 kilometers (292 miles). The Super e-Platform frame structure will be fitted to the Han L and Tang L models.

BYD aim to extend their cars' range capacity to 434-497 miles in the not too distant future. Battery charging times were previously around 33 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%.

“To completely solve users' anxiety over charging, our pursuit is to make the charging time for EVs as short as the refueling time for fuel vehicles – achieving ‘oil-electric parity’ in charging speed,” Wang Chuanfu, said at Monday’s event.

The Super-e platform, combines a new Flash Charging Battery with new silicon carbide power chips with voltage levels of up to 1,500V.

BYD, which stands for ‘build your dreams’, also announced plans to build 4,000 of the new ultra-fast charging stations in China to support the new technology.
