It’s National Pepperoni Pizza Day, and while most of us don’t need an excuse to indulge in a slice covered with the No. 1 selling topping, what better one is there. But both pizzas and pepperoni come in many different forms.

Since originating in Naples, the dish has picked up unique styles in the different regions of Italy and here in the New World. And while New York is considered the home of Pizza in the United States, albeit Connecticut has irked its neighbors by declaring itself the “Pizza Capital of the United States,” great pizzerias can be found from coast to coast.

When deciding where to get a ‘pepperoni pizza’ on September 20, you may want to consider those that are considered to have an edge on the competition. Here are eight that top the rankings according to Pizza Today.

No. 1: Modern Apizza, New Haven, Connecticut

Perhaps those who threw up the new road signs in Connecticut made the claim based on Modern Apizza being considered the home of the best pepperoni pizza by the publication for pizzeria owners. The outlet says that “New Haven-style pizza has become synonymous as a best American pizza style.” And the ‘holy trinity” of the style can be found on State Street between the I-90 freeway and Yale University.

No. 2: Razza, Jersey City, New Jersey

To the chagrin of New Yorkers, the No. 2 on the list is not in the Big Apple either but across the river in New Jersey. Established in 2012 by Dan Richer, the chef and owner, Razza bakes its pizzas in a wood burning oven and according to The New York Times “is one of the few that excel at both dough and toppings.”

No. 3: Metro Pizza, Las Vegas, Nevada

Metro Pizza traces its roots back to 1928 and “each pizza we serve is a hand-crafted masterpiece, infused with three generations of passion and expertise,” according to the pizzeria. Those who have a chance to visit one of their locations in Las Vegas on Friday, September 20 can celebrate National Pepperoni Pizza Day with a free classic pepperoni topping on your pizza all day.

No. 4: Via Tribunali, Seattle, Washington

The first Via Tribunali location in Seattle opened in 2004 surrounded by many outlandish rumors, which most of the happened to be true they say, as a former auto body shop was transformed into a pizzeria. While the pizzeria says it is an exaggeration, Via Tribunali has been called “more authentic than the pizzerias of Naples.” Maybe it’s the oven’s bricks rumored to have come from Naples rich with Vesuvian ash.

No. 5: Via 313, Austin, Texas

Via 313 is a purveyor of Detroit-style pizza, the hometown of its founders Brandon and Zane Hunt. Thus the name which means “by way of” and 313 being the area code of Detroit. Their pizzas are cooked in steel pans which “are reminiscent of the automobile parts pans commonly used by mechanics in Detroit.” The two types of cheese cover the whole of the pizza, even the sides of the crust, and the red sauce isn’t added until after the pizza comes out of the oven.

No. 6: Fine Folk Pizza, Fort Myers, Florida

Fine Folk moved to southwest Florida in 2015 having a few years earlier started making pizzas in Sea Isle City, NJ. The family owned and operated pizzeria offers over thirty specialty pizza along with other fare.

However, “it is not your traditional pizza shop” they say. While targeted at the kid clientele, anyone who wants to learn to flip pizza dough like a pro can get lessons from one of Fine Folk’s certified pizza acrobats.

No. 7: Paulie Gee’s, Brooklyn, NY

Paulie Gee’s opened its first pizzeria in 2010 in Brooklyn and was one of a group of restaurants that was “teaching New Yorkers to treat pizza like a special occasion,” according to Eater New York. “Its customers dressed up and waited in line to eat wood-fired pizzas with folded napkins on their laps.”

Pizza lovers can now enjoy its atmosphere and fare at locations in Baltimore, Chicago, Columbus and Philadelphia as well.

No. 8: Andolini’s Pizzeria, Tulsa, Oklahoma

Andolini’s Pizzeria serves up “Tulsa Style” pizza which combines all the fermentation and culinary practices of New York, New Jersey, LA, San Francisco, all places where founders and owners Mike and Jim Bausch lived, to make its dough. Seven days a week the pizzeria gets its produce fresh and never uses a freezer to store anything.
