Neither in California nor NY is this the state where Walmart is hiring the most people for its stores

Walmart is the largest private employer in the United States with 1.6 million associates provides starting hourly pay well above the federal minimum wage.

Where Walmart is hiring

There are over 160 million people employed in the United States and roughly one percent of them work for Walmart, the nation’s largest private employer. The retail giant based out of Bentonville, Arkansas is the largest single employer in 21 states across the nation. Nationwide, the company says thar it now operates over 4,600 Walmart stores and 600 Sam’s Clubs.

In its home state, Walmart employed 4% of the state’s workforce in 2019 and one third of retail employees worked at one of the its blue stores according to Visual Capitalist. In nearby Alabama, of the 77,956 job ads posted in the state this year in November, of those Walmart had the second highest number at 923 according to AL.com.

Here’s where Walmart is hiring

On the employment website Indeed, there are over 44,000 job listings for stockers and personal shoppers which pay between $17 and $25 per hour. For a quick glance, some of the states where multiple listings appear include Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. However, several more states across the nation had multiple job listings as well.

While the company owned by the Walton family has faced criticism for low wages in the past, it now claims to have improved conditions for workers and boosted salaries. It now offers to cover 100% of college or trade school tuition and books from the moment a new associate is hired through its Live Better U. Other benefits include free Walmart+ membership.

Walmart says that last year over 300,000 associates in the US were promoted and that 75% of its store managers, who can earn up to $400,000 per year, started off earning an hourly wage.
