Neither New York nor California: this state surprises with the most generous tips in the U.S.

The United States is a bit of an outlier when it comes to tipping. Due to its deep cultural roots, Americans are generous with gratuities, some more so.

There has always been a lot of debate in the United States with regards to tipping, but even more so in recent years. In the past, it was more around who you should tip and how much gratuity you should give.

Nowadays though, with the tipping culture getting out of hand, according to a majority of Americans, people are rethinking the whole concept. That said, Americans are a bit of an outlier with the generosity of the tips they give, but some more than others.

The Americans who don’t pinch pennies when it comes to tipping

The average standard tip you are expected to leave for a server when dining out in the U.S. is 15%. But according to a report by Lending Tree, Americans are more generous, at least those who pay with a card or digital payment.

Looking at data from Toast, the online marketplace found that those who eat out at full-service restaurants are leaving a gratuity equivalent to nearly 20% of the bill, once taxes are factored out. Even servers at limited-service or quick-service restaurants like Chipotle, Starbucks and Pizza Hut are getting tips equivalent to almost 16% of the tab on average.

The states which have the most generous diners are as follows:

  1. Delaware: 22.1% (full-service 22.6% / quick-service 18.4%)
  2. West Virginia: 21.0% (21.4% /18.7%)
  3. New Hampshire: 20.9% (21.8% / 15.4%)
  4. Indiana: 20.7% (21.2% / 17.1%)
  5. Ohio: 20.6% (21.1% / 17.7%)

The states which have the stingiest diners are as follows:

  1. California: 17.3% (full-service 17.8% / quick-service 14.8%)
  2. Washington: 17.8% (18.3% / 15.6%)
  3. Florida : 18.2% (18.5% / 15.6%)
  4. Nevada: 18.2% (18.7% /15.7%)
  5. Louisiana: 18.5% (19.0% / 16.0%)
