Nereo Guzmán, oncologist: “Eliminating sugar consumption does not stop cancer, it only weakens you and makes you live in fear”
The healthcare professional shared a video on TikTok debunking the myth that sugar causes cancer to grow faster.

Cancer is considered one of the most harmful and dangerous diseases humans can face. It involves the uncontrolled growth of abnormal, or cancerous, cells within the body. In more advanced or severe cases, these cells can cluster together to form tumors or spread to other parts of the body through metastasis.
In this context, Nereo Guzmán, an oncologist and science communicator on social media, posted a video on TikTok explaining whether sugar consumption actually feeds cancerous tumors or if this belief lacks scientific evidence. “One of the most common questions I get in the clinic and in my videos is whether sugar feeds tumors,” he explains.

“There is a widespread myth that if someone has cancer, they should not eat sugar because it would fuel tumor cells. But is that really true?” Guzmán asks. He then clarifies that while “cancer cells do use glucose for energy,” normal cells rely on the same process.
“If you completely stop consuming sugar, your body will still produce and obtain glucose through other pathways,” he adds. He goes on to emphasize an important point about sugar and cancer: “Eliminating sugar will not stop cancer, but it can weaken the patient.”
“What matters is not cutting out sweets, but controlling excess.”
Extreme dietary restrictions are not the solution. Instead, what matters is a sensible plan aligned with a person’s overall health goals. “The key is not to eliminate all sweets, but to control excesses, especially ultra-processed foods. What we should aim for is a balanced diet based on fruits, vegetables, and carbohydrates.”
“This approach helps keep the immune system strong and the body prepared to undergo treatment and recover. It is not about living in fear, but about living with balance,” concludes Nereo Guzmán.
